During an award ceremony on April 19, 2017 – Prof. Jacob Schneider made the below comments
My life
“Born in 1935 in a small village in Switzerland – My father died when I was 3 years of age. We were poor. But I became a school teacher and worked as such for 3 years before I could join the medical school. My dream was to become a missionary doctor like Albert Schweitzer. But I became interested in Pathology. However the intention to work in Africa remained and my first workplace as a pathologist was Muhimbili Hospital in Dar-es-Salaam. Regrettably my wife died.
I stayed with my children in Switzerland and become a professor of cardiovascular pathology. When I become sixty my children were adults and I had the freedom to return to Africa. At that time I had an Ethiopian colleague, Seife Hailemariam; when he heard of my plan, he said, but not Tanzania, come to us. I got an invitation from our University (AAU) which I accepted in 1996.
I retired at the age of 62 years and arrived with my second wife in Bole airport January 1997. Since then I tried to assist my colleagues in the department of pathology in teaching and diagnostics. Regrettably my wife died in 2000. I have given all; I am tired and plan to go home.”
